Position: Probation Services Technician

Classification Level & Salary Range: $39,958 - $64,962 (CL 23/1 – CL 23/61) Starting salary depends entirely upon qualifications and eligibility.
Type of Appointment: Temporary Full Time (Not to exceed one year and one day from appointment. Based on the needs of the U.S. Probation Office and subject to the availability of funding. The U.S. Probation Office may extend this appointment past the period identified in this announcement.) *This position may be a career progression step toward becoming a United States Probation Officer Assistant (USPOA) or a United States Probation Officer (USPO) for qualified applicants. To be eligible for a USPOA or USPO opening, candidates must meet all requirements for the USPO position, to include: age, medical, and educational parameters.
Introduction:
The U.S. Probation Office for the Middle District of Florida is accepting applications for a Probation Services Technician in the Tampa Division. The Probation Services Technician provides technical, administrative, investigative, and case management support to probation officers and officer assistants and other members of the court unit. This includes assisting during presentence investigations and post-conviction supervision. The incumbent will also assist with administrative support by electronically filing case documents, assisting with database entries, managing electronic case files, and providing receptionist coverage and completing general clerical duties as needed.

Representative Duties:
- Administer a low-risk administrative caseload. Activities may include, but are not limited to, reviewing monthly supervision reports; completing and reviewing required records checks; conducting all Probation and Pretrial Services Automated Case Tracking System (PACTS) work associated with the opening and closing of cases; monitoring payment of criminal financial penalties; conducting financial investigations as needed; working with the U.S. Attorney’s Financial Litigation Unit; processing travel requests; and preparing reports for the court. The Probation Services Technician will work cooperatively with a Supervisory Probation Officer as needed for the assignment of activities requiring direct defendant/offender contact to a U.S. Probation Officer.
- Administer an inactive caseload. Activities can include, but are not limited to, processing collateral law enforcement requests, conducting and reviewing records checks, conducting and/or initiating investigations, and preparing reports for the court.
- Assist officers in obtaining verifiable and supportable documentation during presentence investigations.
- Interview defendants in the office during initial visits, review documents provided by defendants, and request follow-up materials.
- Process records checks through local and national databases, including those designed to provide arrest, financial, and background information.
- Gather criminal history records, enter information in PACTS, and draft summaries in guideline format.
- Conduct inquiries with collateral agencies to verify defendants’ background information.
- Gather and organize victim information, including those related to financial loss, and enter it into excel spreadsheets or database systems.
- Assist officers in obtaining verifiable and supportable documentation for case management of individuals to be released from prison or on supervision.
- Interview new releasees in the office and gather initial information and documents to assist probation officers in reentry planning.
- Assist officers in caseload management by providing administrative support, such as reviewing and updating location monitoring schedules, assisting with Intensive Reentry Program reports, and communicating with treatment providers, employers, and other collateral contacts.
- Conduct case file reviews and advise officers of matters needing their attention.
- Assist with urinalysis testing and processing.
- Draft, format, and edit status and/or compliance reports for officers to submit to the court or other agencies that have a business relationship with the court.
- Assist officers in responding to collateral requests for information.
- Process periodic record checks on caseloads, including inactive supervision as well as deportation cases.
- Set up new supervision case records and perform various case file management tasks.
- Update information in the Probation and Pretrial Services Automated Case Tracking System (PACTS).
- Assist with general office coverage duties such as, but not limited to, reception duties, and general clerical work.
- Participate in on-going training and development in to remain current of advanced techniques.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualification and Experience:
To qualify for the entry level, a person must be a high school graduate or equivalent and have at least two years of case management, clerical, office administrative, or other work experience, which provided knowledge of general office practices and procedures.
General Experience:
Progressively responsible case management, clerical, office, or other work that indicates the possession of, or the ability to acquire, the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the position's duties.
Educational Substitution:
Education above the high school level may be substituted for required general experience on the basis of one academic year (30 semester or 45 quarter hours) equals one year of general experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a field of academic study, such as criminal justice, criminology, psychology, sociology, human relations, business or public administration.
Currently performing similar duties in a legal, human services, and/or community corrections setting. Similar roles may include probation officer, probation officer assistant, case manager, case worker, client services specialist, foster care specialist, child protective services case worker or social worker.

The successful candidate must be able to maintain a professional demeanor, work harmoniously with others, and be responsive, courteous, and polite. Incumbent must be a perennial learner with the desire to be an expert in our changing field.
Conditions of Employment:
The selectee will be subject to a background investigation to include an FBI fingerprint check. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or eligible for work in the United States.
